The absence of the PrntScrn button to take screenshots is probably the first thing you noticed if you just switched from a Windows computer to a Mac. Even though capturing a screenshot on a Mac is easy, new macOS users may find it a bit challenging at first. With just a few keystrokes, you may quickly capture the whole screen, a window, or just a portion of your screen. Thus, continue reading to find out how to use various keyboard combinations to create a screenshot on a Mac.
Take a Screenshot of the Entire Mac
On your Mac, you may take crisp screenshots and modify them to your liking before sharing them using AirDrop. To take a full screen screenshot on a Mac, use this shortcut:
- On the preferred Mac window, press Shift + Command + 3 to capture a screenshot of the entire screen.
- You will then see a thumbnail at the bottom right of your screen, click on it to view the screenshot or wait for it to get saved on your desktop.
Grab a Screenshot of a Selected Area on Mac
With this technique, your mouse becomes a crosshair that you may use to pick and capture certain areas of your screen. To take a screenshot of a section of your Mac's screen, use this keyboard shortcut:
- On the preferred Mac window, press Shift + Command + 4, and the cursor will transform into a crosshair.
- Now, click and drag the crosshair to mark the selection and release it to capture the screenshot.
- You can also press & hold the Space bar while dragging to move the selection.
- If you don’t want to take a screenshot, press the Esc key.
Take a Screenshot of a Mac Window or Menu
Although the previously mentioned approach may be used to capture a window, there is an additional Mac screenshot shortcut that can be used to record a specific window or menu. Here's how it functions:
- Open the window or menu you want to capture.
- Press the Shift + Command + 4 + Space bar keys and the particular window gets greyed out, and the pointer turns into a camera icon.
- Now, click on a window where you want to capture a screenshot.
- To exclude the window’s shadow from the screenshot, simply press and hold the Option key while you click.
Using the Screen Capture Window on a Mac, take a screenshot
Up till now, I've covered every popular Mac screenshot shortcut, such as how to take screenshots of a window, the whole screen, and just a section of it. Although each of the aforementioned techniques may be used independently to create distinct screenshots, Mac also provides a feature-rich screen-capturing application that allows you to take screenshots from a single dashboard. This is how it operates:
- Press the Shift + Command + 5 keyboard shortcut to bring up the screen capture window.
- Here you get the different options to take screenshots on Mac. Here are your options to capture screenshots: Capture the entire screen, a window, or a portion of the screen. You can also use this method to screen record on Mac.
Modify the Mac's Screenshot Save Location
Whether you are taking a window or the whole screen, all of your Mac's screenshots are automatically saved to your desktop. Simply use the techniques covered below to modify this default save location:
Making Use of the Screen Capture WindowObservation:You will need to establish the location each time you take a screenshot using this approach, which is only effective for a single snapshot.
- Press the “Shift + Command + 5″ keys to bring up the screen capture window.
- Now, click the Options tab at the bottom and choose the location in the pop-up menu.
- Launch the Finder app and press the Shift + Command + N keys to create a new folder to save screenshots.
- Now, open the Terminal app using the Spotlight Search.
- Here, type in the command
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location
and hit Space. - Now, drag the newly created folder into the Terminal window.
- The folder path will appear after the command. Hit Enter, and it will change the default location of screenshots on Mac.
