How to Disable the AI Overview in Google Search

The search engine behemoth revealed at Google I/O 2024 that it is making AI Overview (formerly known as SGE) available to all American users. It pushes down the blue links and places AI-generated responses on top of the search results based on your query. In response to the recent update, a large number of users on Google Search Community are searching for a method to disable AI Overview on Google Search. With this tutorial, we'll show you many ways to disable AI-generated responses so you can finally wave goodbye to Google AI.

The Simplest Way to Disable Google AI Summary

A simple Chrome plugin created by Zach Barnes (GitHub) prevents Google from displaying AI-generated summaries. How to install and configure it in your browser is provided here.

  • Head to this link and install the Hide Google AI Overviews extension.
  • Now, go ahead and make a Google Search. You won’t see AI Overviews anymore.

Put the Google AI Extension to sleep.

AI Summary listings on Google Search results may be prevented with the use of a plugin called Goodbye, Google AI, created by Avram Piltch of Tom's Hardware. Here's how to install it on Edge and Chrome.

  • Head over to this link and install the Bye Bye, Google AI extension in Chrome or Edge.
  • Now, you can enable the “Hide AI Overviews” checkbox and click on “Save”. You can also block other elements like featured snippets, shopping blocks, etc.
  • Go ahead and make a search on Google. You won’t find AI Overviews on top.

In desktop browsers, disable the Google AI Overview

A clever tip from Tom's Hardware ensures that the AI Overview appears at the top of Google Search results, leaving just web results visible. Although the methods provided here are for Chrome, they should also apply to other Windows browsers. The Search Engine page is located inside the browser's Settings page, which you must locate.

  • On Chrome, copy and paste the below address.
  • Then, hit Enter to open the Search Engine page.

  • Next, scroll down and click on the ‘pencil’ icon next to Google (Default).
  • Here, under the ‘Shortcut’ field, change google.com to google.com/ncr and save it. We are changing this so that we can add a new entry.
  • Now, scroll down and click ‘Add‘ next to Site search.
  • Here, add “Google (Web)” under the Name field and google.com under the Shortcut field.
  • Next, under the URL field, paste the below address.
  • Now, click on “Save”.

  • Click on the 3-dot menu next to the “Google (Web)” entry that you created and click on “Make default“.
  • Now, perform a Google Search and AI Overviews should not appear, thus, stopping you from getting incorrect information and hallucinations by Google’s AI.

Disable the Google AI Overview on iOS and Android.

You can't create a new search engine item in the Chrome browser on iOS or Android. You can't install a new search engine with Edge, Opera, or Brave either. However, Firefox does, thus in order to do this, you will need to change browsers
  • Go ahead and install the Firefox browser (Android and iOS).
  • Next, go to Settings – > Search.
  • Here, choose “Default search engine”.
  • After that, tap on “Add search engine“.

  • Next, enter “Google Web” in the Name field.
  • Paste the below address in the String URL field and tap on “Save”.

  • Finally, select “Google Web” as the default search engine.
  • Now, make a search on Google. The AI Overview should be blocked.

Extra Procedures for Turning Off Google AI Summary

Although Google claims on its support website that you can turn off AI Overviews, will not turn off .everyone Overviews of AI in the search. It will, at minimum, turn off a few of the AI-generated search results on the website. The actions to take are as follows.
  • Head to labs.google.com/search/manage (visit) on your Chrome browser. You can do this on both desktop and smartphone.
  • Now, disable the toggle for “AI overviews and more”. This will remove some AI Overviews from Google Search.
In addition, choose "Web" from the "More" menu if you come across AI Overviews. Now, the AI Overview is absent from the results of Google Search. Yes, the business has included this new function to transport us back to the era of the blue connections.This is the proper way to bid Google AI farewell on the search results page.
